Compliance Specialist

Position Summary

The Compliance Specialist will support advocacy work and related programmatic operations at Tides and Tides Advocacy.  In particular, the Compliance Specialist will be primarily responsible for tracking and reporting lobbying activities, filing registrations, identifying and researching compliance issues associated with proposed activities, and maintaining, organizing and preparing relevant training materials.  Additionally, the Compliance Specialist will assist with management of Tides’ and Tides Advocacy’s insurance program by obtaining insurance approval for new partners, providing updated partner information to insurers, obtaining certificates of insurance and approval for special events, and managing correspondence with insurance broker.  In all of their work, the Compliance Specialist will work closely with the Compliance Manager and other members of the Legal, Risk and Compliance (“LRC”) team to identify, resolve and anticipate issues.  The ideal candidate for this position will uplift and embody Tides’ core values – Respect, Accountability, Creativity, Equity and Empowerment – in all areas of work and engagement with team members and partners. 

In the past, Tides staff have worked predominantly from our offices in San Francisco and New York. Today, our hybrid work model supports staff with remote work from anywhere in the United States. We will be reopening our offices in the future, date to be determined. 

The Compliance Specialist is an exempt position. Exempt employees are expected to work the appropriate and necessary time in order to complete key assignments and related tasks on schedule. 

Essential Functions

  • Prepare lobbying registrations and reports for review by Compliance Manager.  File registrations and reports after approval. 

  • Maintain lobbying reporting calendar, following up with project staff and others for required information.

  • As needed and under the direction of Compliance Manager, gather material for a regulatory audit related to lobbying reporting.

  • Manage lobbying time tracking system, including adding or removing staff, answering questions, following up as needed to obtain time reports.  Analyze time reports to determine if additional lobbying registrations are required.

  • Respond to inquiries from Tides and Tides Advocacy staff and staff of fiscally sponsored projects concerning lobbying and advocacy reporting and registration requirements.

  • Organize, maintain and prepare lobbying guidance provided to Tides and Tides Advocacy  staff and fiscally sponsored projects.  Identify compliance issues reflected in proposed lobbying and other advocacy activities.

  • In partnership with legal counsel, research advocacy and gift-related regulations.

  • Support insurance program by coordinating insurance approvals, providing information to insurers and managing related correspondence with insurance broker.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Commitment to advancing Tides’ mission and values

  • Prior experience and advanced understanding of lobbying regulations and ethics rules; prior experience with time tracking systems a plus

  • Familiarity with legal frameworks governing organizations exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code

  • Strong organizational skills and project management skills

  • Ability to manage a variety of activities and pay close attention to detail

Education and Experience

  • 3+ years of legal, compliance or paralegal experience

  • 2+ years of direct experience with lobbying and other issue advocacy compliance

  • Familiarity with Salesforce and Microsoft Office suite
