Executive Director, ESG Strategy & Engagement


The role of Executive Director, ESG Strategy & Engagement is a unique opportunity to join our Company as a key member of the Office of Social Business Innovation. This individual will help shape and execute the Company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy across the organization to drive business value and social good. The leader will also be a highly visible Company representative to the external world, interfacing through stakeholder engagements in response to external ESG inquiries and leading ESG issues management strategies. The Executive Director will ensure recognition for and awareness of the Company’s ESG leadership as the individual responsible for ESG messaging and positioning. This person should be familiar with the ESG landscape, including related trends and best practices, to serve as a trusted advisor across the business and be a powerful change agent to achieve greater ESG transparency and disclosure. The candidate selected for this role will work under the guidance of the Assistant Vice President, ESG Strategy & Engagement, in a fast-paced environment with a rapidly evolving set of expectations from all stakeholder groups. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partner closely with Associate Vice President, ESG Strategy & Engagement to help shape and execute the corporate ESG strategy to drive business outcomes, reduce risk, enhance reputation, and support the Company’s culture, values and mission.

  • Identify and/or lead priority ESG initiatives, including planning and execution, to deliver on the three-year ESG strategic roadmap and differentiate the Company’s ESG portfolio and performance.

  • Oversee the access to health component of the Company’s ESG strategy, working across the organization to help advance an enterprise-wide access to health strategies, policies and programs and to drive contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Help advise leadership on global best practices with respect to ESG, through monitoring and analyzing strategies, trends, policies, and programs.

  • Speak as the Company’s ESG authority in stakeholder engagements, engaging with topic owners and subject matter experts where appropriate, developing and implementing issues response strategies and tools, and evaluating and prioritizing different stakeholder groups, interests, and information requirements.

  • Manage a staff of two directors who have responsibility for select ESG focus areas. The Executive Director will have strategic oversight for the Director’s portfolios, including the access to health and environmental sustainability components of the Company’s ESG strategy and working across the organization to help advance enterprise-wide strategies, policies and programs and to drive contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals. This also includes oversight of the Company’s Mectizan Donation Program. 

  • Have responsibility for the strategic oversight of communications to raise awareness of the Company’s ESG commitment. Influence and forge relationships with Global Communications, overseeing internal and external communications that are aligned with our Company’s corporate narrative and strategy.

  • Co-lead, with the Associate Vice President, ESG Strategy & Engagement, the strategic approach to annual ESG reporting and participation in major ESG-related surveys and indices that impact the Company’s reputation.

  • Provide strategic direction on relationships with key external stakeholders and multi-lateral organizations.

  • Direct and lead external agency and consulting partnerships.

  • Ensure strong fiscal management, including oversight of operational program budgets.



  • Bachelor’s degree in business, public health or international relations.

  • 10-12 years of experience in public health, sustainability, corporate responsibility, or pharmaceutical industry.  

  • Success leading large-scale initiatives, engaging a variety of stakeholders, and influencing without direct authority.

  • Creative and strategic thinker. 

  • Demonstrated experience in strategy development and issues and relationship management.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills; ability to work effectively at all levels and with diverse individuals and organizations.

  • Strong communication skills, including ability to translate complex ESG matters into clear, easy to understand communications for leaders outside the ESG space.

  • Highly effective at balancing business needs and realities with ESG objectives to deliver an ambitious and feasible strategy and plan.

  • Skill in applying critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving methods with strong attention to detail and precision.

  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to handle multiple projects.

  • Experience in financial management. 

  • Supervisory/management experience.


  • Master’s degree in public health, international policy, business management or related fields.

  • International experience and/or experience working with non-governmental organizations.

  • Media relations experience.

  • Knowledge and experience with ESG reporting tools and frameworks (GRI, SASB, CDP, MSCI).

  • Demonstrated ability to thrive and adapt in a fast paced, changing/growing environment while maintaining focus on strategy and objectives.
