President and CEO

Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site seeks a strategic, dynamic, and agile individual to become the President and Chief Executive Officer.

Operational from 1829 until 1971 and recognized for its grand architecture and strict discipline, Eastern State Penitentiary was the first world’s true ‘penitentiary,’ a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret in the hearts of prisoners.  At its completion, the building was the largest and most expensive public structure ever erected in the United States, and quickly became a model for more than 300 prisons worldwide. Its valued, sky-lit cells once held many of the America’s most notorious lawbreakers, including bank robber ‘Slick Willie’ Sutton and Al Capone.

Today, the site is a museum and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and open to the public for tours seven days a week, 12 months a year. There is an audio tour, critically-acclaimed artist installations, and award-winning exhibits. The site interprets the legacy of American criminal justice reform, from the nation’s founding through to the present day, within the long-abandoned cellblocks of the nation’s most historic prison.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and Chief Executive will be charged with developing and implementing the institution’s next strategic plan in partnerships with many constituencies. The leader will need to manage a talented and committed staff and provide financial stewardship in maximizing earned revenue and promoting the site as a destination regionally and nationally thoughtfully.
