Founded in 2019 in response to philanthropists seeking ways to become more strategic in their charitable giving, we understand that philanthropy is personal and aim to empower philanthropists with the tools, sector-knowledge, and discipline to maximize their social impact. Position Opportunity

Demand has continued to increase for our advisory services since we launched in 2019. Thus, we are seeking an individual who is eager to help us scale our methodology and support our clients, ultimately infusing more capital to communities in smart and strategic ways.

The JH Philanthropy team currently consists of two deeply passionate leaders, as well as a small team of subcontractors and strategic partners, who are committed to bringing more equity to philanthropic practices and engaging incredible people in this work. We are seeking a Senior Philanthropic Advisor who is going to share this vision and commitment, and have a lot of fun doing it! The person who will fill this role is a highly motivated, impact-driven, analytical, and entrepreneurial problem solver. They are opportunistic in nature and will capitalize upon business growth and client engagement, while keeping the changemakers and social entrepreneurs doing the community work at the center of our work. They are excited to roll-up their sleeves to scale the business and take a leadership role in supporting extraordinary philanthropists tackle major problems and inequities.

Key Responsibilities

In partnership with the CEO, the Senior Philanthropic Advisor will advise individual donors, DAFs, foundations, and corporations on their grantmaking and other philanthropic activities. The Advisor will lead a portfolio of accounts, while contributing to firm-wide projects. As such, they may serve as the executive director/program officer for all or parts of clients’ grantmaking portfolios, including researching areas of interest to donors, meeting with nonprofit organizations to conduct site visits, conducting due diligence on potential grantees, making grant recommendations, and evaluating reports and impact. In addition to client-facing work, this individual will work with the JH Philanthropy team to develop the firm's strategies, policies, and operations.

  • Client engagement responsibilities:
    • Utilize data-driven approaches to conduct due diligence on prospective grantees in alignment with client priorities, produce analyses and reports on giving opportunities, and make recommendations to donor
    • Develop, cultivate, and maintain relationships with a portfolio of clients. Represent clients in their philanthropic and civic activities
    • Advise clients on how to be high-impact and nonprofit-centered philanthropists with clear and authentic philanthropic priorities
    • Participate in site visits and community-learning initiatives to stay up-to-date on trends in the sector and to be aware of community priorities
    • Serve as a project manager and/or lead for philanthropic initiatives, collaboratives, and other special projects for clients
    • Maintain familiarity with procedures, regulations, and best practices for major charitable giving vehicles
    • Potentially become a subject matter expert in specific philanthropic practices such as next generation philanthropy, giving circles and collective philanthropy, launching philanthropic ventures, or other initiatives
  • Firm development:
    • Lead, research, draft and present proposals to prospective clients
    • Build tools, systems, technologies, and other internal infrastructures to make JH Philanthropy as equitable, effective, and efficient as possible in supporting philanthropic clients and running the business
    • Maintain a nonprofit-centered approach to philanthropy by engaging in ongoing community-building activities on behalf of JH Philanthropy and clients
    • Contribute to building a dynamic, inclusive, high-performing, and fun culture
    • Represent JH Philanthropy throughout the nonprofit, philanthropic, and business communities


Desired Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the philanthropic and/or nonprofit field with increasing responsibility and proven effectiveness in working with grantmakers and changemakers. MBA preferred, but not required
  • Analytical capabilities: ability to assess a sector and determine best mechanisms to achieve desired impact. Ability to navigate from big ideas to the individual details to advance a project
  • Resourceful and entrepreneurial approach: comfortable in the gray and can be proactive without a defined playbook
  • Client-services focused: dedication to delivering an amazing client and partner experience, enhancing client satisfaction and building strong client relationships
  • Experience with personal, family, and corporate philanthropy preferred. Consulting and/or project management experience a plus
  • Humility and low ego, combined with integrity, transparency, and a strong ethical orientation
  • Strong written and oral communication, facilitation, and presentation skills
  • Excitement for navigating your own path with an unfaltering commitment towards continuous learning and improvement
  • Commitment to and experience in understanding the impacts of societal forces that impact diverse populations across the city and beyond
  • Ability to build meaningful relationships with stakeholders from a variety of lived experiences


Compensation and Benefits

JH Philanthropy is committed to providing its employees with a competitive salary and benefits. As a start-up, we are continuously navigating how we can best support our employees and we will work alongside the right candidate to finalize appropriate salary and benefits throughout this process and beyond.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Annual salary range $75,000-$85,000, depending on experience
  • Unlimited paid time off, meaning we trust our employees to manage their workload throughout the year while supporting a healthy work-life balance
  • Flexible work arrangements, meaning JHP does not have a set office space and employees work from home, with the exception of in-person client meetings and planned team meetings
  • $1,000 stipend for professional development opportunities
