Did you know that ...

- According to FAO, one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption is thrown away?
- Food waste generates 3.3 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases?
- 2 billion people could be fed with all the food that goes to waste?

It may be overwhelming to try to solve global hunger, but how about we look at what is going on in our community? Every day, lots of food is thrown away at public schools. Food scraps could be turned into compost, which could be used in the school's vegetable garden (if the school doesn't have a garden, it should!). A lot of food comes prepackaged in plastic containers or bags and if not eaten, it ends in the trash bin. What is the message that students are getting? Why are they being taught that it is OK to throw away food? Why aren't they taught to recycle correctly? And why can't food be taken home or donated, especially in low-income communities where students are not getting enough food at home?
