An unprecedented number of kids are going hungry during this crisis:

· The coronavirus crisis has ripped a giant hole in the American economy. Today millions of parents are finding it hard to make ends meet, many for the first time.

· Right here in California, more than 2 million kids could face hunger this year as the pandemic rages on. [Feeding America October projections]

· In the past 10 months, we’ve seen this crisis undo more than a decade’s worth of progress toward ending child hunger.

· And in 2020 we also saw devastating wildfires ravage the state, displacing families and presenting an additional threat to their health and economic stability.

Amidst increased need and an uncertain school year, school meals are more important than ever:

· During this crisis, school meals can be a valuable source of nutrition and comfort for kids, while alleviating stress for parents who have found themselves juggling new responsibilities or struggling to make ends meet.

· With families in our state having been hit hard by this pandemic, the need for school meals has grown substantially. By providing up to three meals a day for kids, even if they’re not attending school in person, school meals allow parents to stretch their limited food budget.

· During this crisis, school meals can also be a valuable source of nutrition and comfort for kids, many of whom have seen their routines and schedules turned upside down.

· School meals help kids learn: When kids have enough to eat, they’re happier and healthier, they do better in school and have better attendance – that’s good for kids and our communities.
