HackCarey 2015

The second annual HackCarey is hosted by Johns Hopkins students to promote computer literacy among Baltimore high school students. This year’s event will be sponsored in part by Facebook, and will be conducted by Baltimore-based firm, Mindgrub Technologies. Our goal is to expose a new group of local youth to coding, develop a sense of competence, and expose local students to different career paths in technology.

Last year, 44 Baltimore City Public Schools students participated in an intensive computer programming experience. By day’s end the students created a live app that pulled information from Twitter, analyzed it using IBM’s cognitive computing engine, Watson, and returned the results via text message.

This year’s full day of coding will focus on building a web game using HTML5 and Javascript, which the students will eventually connect to social media. Johns Hopkins students and local developers will mentor the students through the process. By problem-solving together and designing solutions, we hope to inspire the students to pursue careers in technology.
